Is Music an Art Form of Combat?

Popular and Traditional Music has always been a witness of the peoples lives and preoccupations as well as a mean of communicating ideals, initiating actions and giving courage to the people. Conscious of these facts, these three musicians wish to question their personnel musical and political engagements, to confront their cultural heritage experiences and points of view, to build artistic projects together, while engaging their human and political preoccupations.
All three are actively implied in their own way with the means they have, within the cultural lives of their village, city, or region.
Each one is implied within projects that go far beyond the musical frame.

Guigou Chenevier has multiple musical activities (with Etron Fou Leloublan at the origin at Rock in Opposition, Volapük, Body Parts) that he consistently
tries to implicate within larger social realms. He is founder of the
unclassifiable music festival «Gare aux Oreille».
Elio Martusciello, sound sculptor, between contemporary improvisation and
electro-acoustic practises, is at the origin of multiple encounters and
experiments, he recently started a Duo with Tim Hodgkinson.
Richard Deutsch is member of the contemporary string quartet «Metamorphosis», electronic musician and sound-nerd and works on new interfaces technologies to be used in performances and installations.

Is Music a combat art form? A project that situates itself at the crossroad of these three musicians. A questioning of the roots of their own personal human and artistic engagement. A path that leads them to collect and record sounds, testimonies and accounts from amateur musicians, syndicalists and other militants, from workers, peasants and other… in their respective countries, as well as documents showing how social struggles have influenced, modified, impregnated or not, the musical and artistic fields in their time.

It`s a part of the history of peoples aspirations for a better world.
The struggle against Nazism in Austria, the Russian revolution in St.Petersburg, the coal miners struggle in Alès France or the Italian resistance to Mussolini’s fascism… The questioning « Is music a combat art form » is necessarily an endless one, revisited and carried out with contemporary prerogatives by these three musicians, who will not hesitate to call upon amateur musicians, traditional musical groups, choirs (among which the Avignon Rail Road Worker’s Choir), Italian polyphonic groups, Austrian yodellers …etc… to actively participate in this wide adventure.
